Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) refers to work on the discoverability and citability of content in AI-powered search and answer systems. It doesn't replace SEO. Technical indexability, clear search intent, and helpful original content remain the foundation.
What systems need to understand reliably
- Who is the provider and who is responsible for the content?
- Which service is offered to which audience?
- Which concrete experiences, data, or examples are original?
- When was the content published or updated?
- Which primary sources support verifiable statements?
Technical prerequisite
Google points out that pages must be indexed and eligible for snippets to appear in its generative search features. For ChatGPT Search, OAI-SearchBot is the search crawler; it can be controlled via robots.txt. NJUME allows relevant search crawlers, keeps canonicals consistent, and marks up services, breadcrumbs, and articles appropriately.
Citable content instead of GEO hacks
Clear answers, traceable examples, named authorship, and primary sources help people and machines. Google explicitly states that no special AI file or GEO-specific schema is needed. Structured data remains useful but must match the visible content.
How GEO is measured
What can be measured is technical indexing, impressions, clicks, search queries, referral traffic, and mentions in defined test sets. An agency can't guarantee a mention in ChatGPT or AI Overviews. It can improve the prerequisites and document changes transparently.
